Because the Last Eight Years Have Been Really Scary

Halloween 2008 -- More of a Trick than a Treat for Abby

Abby woke up this morning begging for milk. She barely ate or drank yesterday and was feeling it this morning. Will poured her a glass of milk, she took a sip, and we quickly discovered that Abby was going to be at home for sick day number two.

Again today, Abby spent a lot of time on the couch watching cartoons. She cried a few times because she was very sad to miss Halloween. She did wear her new Halloween outfit that her friend Tara gave her, though.

Tonto brought Abby a cool black cat cupcake, but Abby was not interested.

Our friend Steph gave Abby a cool Obama cookie, but that didn't tempt her either.

When our first trick or treater left, Abby began to cry and said, "This is the worst Halloween ever!" She felt so sad that she couldn't go out. We promised her that we would go trick or treating as soon as she felt better.

Our friends Steph, Paul, Skylar, and Paxton then stopped by and Abby rallied! She put on her super cool costume and laughed!

Once again, our friend Carlene made Abby's costume. This year Abby chose another endangered animal -- the Amur leopard (http://www.worldwildlife.org/species/finder/amurleopard/item546.html).
Last year we saw Amur leopards in two different zoos and fell in love with them. They are BEAUTIFUL animals. Sadly, fewer than 40 survive in the wild.

A Math Workbook -- The Perfect Sick Day Gift from Papa

When Will came home from work tonight, he brought sick day gifts for his little girl -- a math workbook and two sticker books! Abby was delighted with all three and especially enjoyed the math workbook

Abby does a lot of the math in her head, but sometimes uses her fingers to solve the problem!

Sick Day

Poor Abby doesn't feel well. She stayed home from school today. She spent most of the day on the couch watching cartoons. She's had a fever off and on and says her "skull bone hurts."

Abby perked up a bit when the mail came and she got a Halloween card from Noni and Granddad. Along with the card came some cool fish stickers. Abby requested a piece of blue paper and made an ocean scene.
Abby managed to keep an eye (or two) on the cartoon while working on her fish scene!

This was Abby's attempt at a smile!

First Snow

Abby was delighted to play in the first snow of the season. Luckily, it didn't stick!

Abby's Good Eye

We were heading out the door the other evening and Abby yelled, "Look!" We turned around and saw a very large deer on our hill. We looked a bit closer and saw another deer as well. This is the second time Abby has seen deer in our backyard!

Before and After

The first picture is Abby before school. She was holding her school picture from last year because this was taken on the day she was having this year's picture taken.

The second picture is Abby after school. Needless to say, we spend a bit of money on tights!

(Sorry for the blur in the first picture. I had my camera on a weird setting and didn't realize it at first. By the time I figured it out, Abby refused to pose for another photo!

Early Morning Raking

Abby woke up early recently and despite the cold temperature, insisted on raking the leaves outside. Daphne -- Abby's sidekick -- insisted on helping!

Math

Abby is currently working a lot on addition at school. And she likes to practice at home. If we go out to eat she adds the number of people at different tables in the restaurant. At dinner, she adds the number of bites she takes of various foods on her plate.

Below is a worksheet she brought home from school on Monday. As was the case when she first started writing her letters, her numbers are often written backwards. I remember that I used to write my e's upside down and backwards. For the record, I no longer do that!

Pennies for Peace

Abby's school is collecting "pennies for peace." The money raised goes to help fund schools in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Abby was really excited to take her first bag of pennies to school.
I know I'm COMPLETELY biased, but really, how cute is this girl?

Apples!

An Engelhardt family tradition is to make a fall trip to Gay's Mills, WI for apples. We did this with Abby for the first time when she was two and went again this year on October 12, 2008.

Grandpa and Grandma drove their mini-van...
...and a rough looking Tonto came along. (Lisa fell while on vacation in TX and broke her arm and got this nasty gash on her head.)

Grandma packed a wonderful picnic, including Spring Grove pop -- an all-time special treat. This was Abby's first taste of soda (that I know of)!

We had our picnic by the beautiful Kickapoo River and Abby found a giant leaf! If anyone can identify it, please let us know!
Abby allowed me to get a few photos with smiles, but quickly tired of her mother's demands!

She finally agreed to a final smile!

The fall colors were beautiful and the apples were tasty -- especially with caramel!

Barack Obama!!

No surprise, but we are Barack Obama supporters! It's a dream to finally have a Presidential candidate that we are excited about! Will had Bill Clinton, but I don't even remember the last nominee I was thrilled about.

Yeah Senator Obama!!!

Abby has totally gotten into the spirit of the campaign. She watches the debates with us -- even begs to stay up to watch. She points out Obama/Biden signs on lawns in our neighborhood and was DELIGHTED to play hooky from school on October 1, 2008 to go see Barack Obama in La Crosse, Wisconsin. We went with our friends the Ebberts and had a great day!

Ruby, Jili, and Abby watched a movie as we waited for Obama's speech.

It's hard to see, but that's Senator Obama at the podium in the lower right corner of this picture.

Here we are happy as can be after a great rally! Behind us is the largest flag I've ever seen!
