Night Time Rituals

Abby's nights go something like this:

A story from Will (Anty and Zep) or me (Queen Angelina and Beowolf) or a chapter book. Will's been reading the Chronicles of Narnia to Abby recently, so I've been enjoying some time off.

Lights out and music or stories on -- currently Abby is enjoying Tales From Cultures Far and Near by Jim Weiss (a gift from her godparents Josh and Molly). We blame Noni and Granddad for this perfectly horrendous CD player that Abby loves. It was a gift at her princess-themed fifth birthday party.

She has two nightlights -- both chosen by her. In perfect Abby style, she picked out a cowboy nightlight and a princess nightlight.

And before I go to bed, I go check on her, making certain that she is all snuggled under layers of blankets. It seems like she should be cold, but like her father, she's almost always toasty warm (and sometimes a little sweaty)!

We're Still Celebrating the Election!

I'll stop taking up Abby's blog space soon, but I just loved these images from the Boston Globe.

I LOVED Lowery's benediction. Everyone was so concerned about Warren, but who even remembers what he said!

Ahhhh!

Such a sweet and poised little girl!

And within the first hours of his tenure, we already have hope that justice and decency will be restored.

Notes from Eric

Abby's classmate Eric has been sending notes home with her for a couple months. My favorite until tonight was a hand drawn "map" to his home. Tonight she came home with the following note.

HOPE

Oh, we are so filled with hope here in the Stott house...

...hope that our dog will someday be house-trained!

Oaths

I know this is supposed to be Abby's blog, but the following is too good not to share...

After Vice-President Biden took his oath of office yesterday, Will told me that every summer he took a similar oath with the city of Carmel -- to protect Carmel from enemies, both foreign and domestic! Classic!

Favorite Obama Daughter

I'm a big fan of Sasha Obama...

...but Abby simply adores Malia!

Good Morning World!

What a perfectly wonderful day this is!

Remember This One?

It's so sad that Bush has been President for Abby's entire life! But, soon, oh so soon, that will change!

So Many Reasons to Love Abby (and Peter Seeger too)

There have been so many times in the last 3.5 years that we have desperately missed DC. These next few days are certainly at the top of the list. We would LOVE to be there to CELEBRATE and to soak it all up, but alas, we need all of our time off for Mr. Baby Boy Stott Number Four.

So, we made do today with free HBO and enjoyed the inaugural celebration concert at the Lincoln Memorial on TV.

Abby watched with us as she did some "stitchin' work." At one point she commented, "I don't usually like grown-up shows, but this is really good because it is about Obama!"

When U2 took the stage, Abby got excited and grabbed one of her handmade instruments and began to sing and dance along to Pride. (She loves the song and recently announced that the line "One man washed on an empty beach" is a reference to Jonah. If you ask Abby who wrote the song, she'll tell you that her imaginary unicorn friend Cornell wrote it!)

I love this picture of Abby jamming with the Edge! Daphne appears to love it as well, but she was just trying to eat Abby's guitar.

And then, to top it all off -- PETE SEEGER walks on to the stage with his grandson! (Granddad sent Abby a Pete Seeger album when she was a wee babe and we've been singing along ever since!) Seeger, who turns 90 in a couple months, led the 500,000 people on the Mall (and the 3 Stotts in their living room) in singing This Land is Your Land. And appropriately in the last days of the Bush Administration, Seeger sang Woody Guthrie's original lyrics:

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn’t say nothing;
That side was made for you and me.
In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?
Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

Oh! The Joy of Twenty Degrees!

Due to the minus twenty temperature, we've been rather cooped up as of late. Abby's school closed down on both Thursday and Friday and the dog was going berserk. Therefore, I was going BERSERK! Thanks to the balmy twenty degree weather today, we enjoyed a great trip to the dog park!

Daphne is typically the hit of the dog park. Today was no exception. A very vocal basset hound and two great dane brothers decided that Daphne was the cat's meow. Abby and Will laughed and laughed and did their best to stand up as the chaos circled them!

Will's arms are just long enough to take a family portrait.

Some people take their dogs to the beach, but that sounds far too wimpy for hardy Minnesotans like the Stotts!

It started snowing on our walk, so Abby did her best to catch snowflakes on her tongue.

I love those rosy cheeks!
Woo Hoo! Standing on tree trunks is really fun!

But wait, how do I get down?

Minus Twenty

As I drove Abby to school this morning, the car thermometer dropped to minus 20 degrees! For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, let's just say that it's beyond cold here. So cold, that we discovered in the parking lot of Abby's school that school was cancelled today because of the temperature.

So cold that the dog is going stir crazy!

Light Saber Fight

This afternoon Abby was gleefully playing with Daphne! Abby had a stick in her hand and she laughingly said, "Look at me Mommy, I'm fighting Daphne with my light saber!" I noticed just now as I was loading the photo that Daphne has a light saber as well.

Anyone want a puppy?

For the record, I was only joking. She's a great dog and we all love her!

Tobogganing

I finally found Abby's sled buried deep in the garage. She was delighted! Grandpa made this for Abby when she was just a baby and each winter when we get it out, she calls it her toboggan. Daphne nearly got run over, but managed to survive!

The pictures aren't great, but if you could have seen me getting Abby on the sled, running to the bottom of the hill, and getting the photos, you'd probably be impressed!

Poor Abby

Try as we do, we are having no luck teaching Daphne that Abby's gloves are not toys.

New Year Getaway

We enjoyed a little getaway to Minneapolis over the new year holiday. We stayed in a hotel and did some shopping for our upcoming trip to South Korea. Abby and Will swam and Will continued reading the Chronicles of Narnia to Abby!

I love this picture of Abby. She now can swim across the pool without any assistance. She works so hard and is so focused!

Famous Pink Piggy

Abby and Granddad have an inside joke about a pink piggy. I've never quite understood it, but it makes them both laugh whenever one or the other says "pink piggy." Abby's aunt Lisa (Tonto) helped Abby buy a pink piggy ornament that Abby sent Granddad for Christmas. Granddad (maybe with Noni's help?) created the following blog for Abby:

www.famouspinkpiggy.blogspot.com

Abby LOVES the blog and squeals (pun intended) with joy every time she receives an email alerting her to a new update by pink piggy! As soon as Will walked in the door tonight, Abby insisted he look at the latest pink piggy blog update.

(Will and I also love pink piggy's blog!) The pictures below are of Abby and Will enjoying the latest antics of pink piggy.
